In 1957 the Blue Bombers team decided they needed a new coach and offered the job to Bud. He decided to take the offer and coached the Blue Bombers until 1966 including 6 Grey Cup appearances, and 4 CFL Championships.
In 1967 Bud became the coach for the Minnesota Vikings. He was a tough coach. He even made the team practice outside in the winters to prepare for cold games. Bud had a winning record over 17 years of coaching he won 151 games, lost 87 games, and tied 5 games. The Vikings also made the playoffs12 times. His Super Bowl record is 0-4.
Bud retired after the 1983 season. In 1985 Bud came back after the Vikings fell apart. He coached again for 1 more year. Bud is the only coach to lead teams to more than 100 victories in the CFL and the NFL. Grant was elected to the CFL Hall of Fame in 1983, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994. Bud still has an office at the Viking Headquarters. He now spends his time enjoying the outdoors hunting and fishing.
