As a child Bud Grant suffered from a disease called Poliomyelitis better known as Polio. Polio is caused by a virus. Symptoms of Polio can be fever, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, neck stiffness, and pain in your arms & legs. Only 5-10% of people sufferer symptoms but get better in a couple of weeks. The other 90-95% of people have no symptoms at all. About .5% of people have lasting effects of the virus that can leave the muscles weak, floppy, and hard to control.
Bud's doctor suggested that he become active playing sports to help strengthen his muscles as part of his recovery from Polio. This was the beginning of his athletic career. He would organize games with kids in his neighborhood and near by towns like baseball, football and basketball. He still had a little limp in high school but this didn't hold him back! He was a star player!
